Sony Philippines, in partnership with the Climate Change Information Center of the Manila Observatory of the Ateneo de Manila University, sponsored recently a three-day workshop for teachers of selected Metro Manila high schools on issues of climate change caused by global warming, and its effects on peoples lives. The workshop is part of a global initiative by Sony Corp., of which Sony Phils. is a majority-owned subsidiary, to generate greater awareness about climate change, possibly the most serious long-term environmental threat facing the world.
The workshop, held at the Manila Observatory, is the second phase of the Sony information campaign on global warming in the country, which started last year with a school outreach and information campaign dubbed "Hot Facts and Cool Solutions," with the participation of another subsidiary, Sony Music Entertainment Philippines, Inc.
Featuring resource speakers who shared information on the causes and the state of climate change, the training workshop is designed to help teachers better understand the subject of global warming, and increase their proficiency in teaching it. The workshop is envisioned to better equip teachers to raise their students awareness, including what they can do as individuals to minimize its impact on the environment.
Speakers included Fr. Daniel McNamara, SJ, Ph. D., director of the Manila Observatory; Fr. Jose Villarin, head of the Climate Studies Divison of the Manila Observatory; Rodel D. Lasco of the College of Forestry and Natural Resources at UP Los Baños; Glenn Roy V. Paraso, health program coordinator of the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement; Lourdes V. Tibig, supervising weather specialist and chief of the Climate Data Section of PAGASA. Dr. Ramona R. Tan served as workshop facilitator.
"Sony, as a global leader in technology innovation that enhances consumers lives, recognizes the need to safeguard the environment so that peoples quality of life can be preserved," said May Sanico, assistant manager for Human Resources of Sony Philippines.
