Americans topple VNL champs

MANILA, Philippines — The road back to the top of the Volleyball Nations League is getting closer and closer for the United States.
The proud Americans yesterday got a massive push to their intended destination after slaying the fancied Italians, the reigning champions, 27-25, 25-20, 25-16, in Week 2 of the VNL at the PhilSports Arena.
The stunning triumph catapulted the US straight to the top on six wins against a lone defeat while shoving Italy down to fourth after absorbing its second defeat against five wins.
Stephanie Samedy and Madison Banks led the way for the Americans, who are hoping to find their way back to the VNL summit after ruling the first three editions of this yearly meet, the last of which came four years ago.
The US continued to stay perfect on Philippine soil as this was its third win this week and seventh overall after sweeping all its four matches four years back.
At first, it looked like the duel would be an epic one as they fought tooth and nail in the opening set before the US snatched it by the skin of its teeth.
It was all over from there as Italy appeared unnerved and got blown away the last two sets where the US imposed its full might.
And it came despite Jordan Thompson being held to just six hits on this one after coming through with double-digit efforts in the Americans’ straight-set victories over Dominican Republic and Czechia.
