MANILA, Philippines — Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) debunked circulating claims about supposed prolonged power outages, warning the public against the spread of false information online.

In an advisory posted on Facebook on Tuesday, March 30, the power distributor flagged as “fake news” reports claiming there would be scheduled three-month-long brownouts.

“Reports of scheduled 3-month-long brownouts are FALSE,” Meralco said.

The company urged the public to remain vigilant and to verify information before sharing, especially amid the spread of misleading posts on social media.

Meralco also reminded consumers to rely only on announcements released through its official channels and those of the government to ensure that updates on power supply are accurate and legitimate.

The reminder comes amid heightened public concerns over energy supply as global market uncertainty grows due to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which has pushed oil prices higher and raised fears of disruptions in energy markets.
