Manila Water unit expands sewer network in Boracay

MANILA, Philippines — A unit of Razon-led Manila Water Co. Inc. has installed new sewer lines on Boracay Island to enhance wastewater treatment capacity in one of the world’s top beach destinations.

Manila Water, through Boracay Water, expanded sewer network coverage in the Balabag area – which includes the island’s busy Stations 1 and 2 – as well as portions of Yapak.

The initiative, implemented under the Yapak Bypass Project, aims to meet the growing wastewater management needs in these areas.

With the expansion, sewer coverage on the island increased to 67 percent from 61 percent, allowing a greater volume of wastewater to be properly disposed and treated.

“Boracay Water remains steadfast in its mission to provide effective water and wastewater services while protecting the island’s natural beauty and ensuring long-term sustainability,” the company’s acting general manager Joanna Intas said.

The project enabled Boracay Water to handle wastewater from Yapak and Balabag, increasing connected accounts to 178 by October 2025, a remarkable 493 percent jump from just 30 at the end of 2024.

“By expanding our sewer network, we not only help maintain the pristine condition of Boracay for tourism but also provide customers with the assurance that their wastewater is properly treated in our sewer treatment plants,” Intas said.

“This means cleaner surroundings, improved public health and a safer environment for residents and visitors alike,” she added.

Boracay Water, an operating unit of Manila Water subsidiary Manila Water Philippine Ventures, is a concessionaire of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority.

Manila Water, meanwhile, serves the east zone of Metro Manila and Rizal under a concession agreement with the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System. It provides water services to over 7.8 million customers.

The company had programmed around P95 billion in capital spending to fund its water and wastewater projects through 2027.
