GBF, Khan Academy launch AI, data-driven MathTalino
MANILA, Philippines — The Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF) and Khan Academy Philippines have launched MathTalino, a new program that uses artificial intelligence and data-driven teaching to help Filipino students improve their math skills.
The initiative builds on a pilot run conducted from May to June 2025 across Quezon City, Valenzuela City and Balanga City, where student math proficiency increased by as much as 70 percent in only five weeks. The result highlighted the potential of AI-driven remediation combined with guided classroom instruction to close learning gaps.
MathTalino focuses on Grades 4 to 6 learners who scored low in Department of Education endorsed diagnostics and uses Khanmigo, Khan Academy’s AI tutoring tool that gives real time feedback to teachers and students.
Parents are also involved through weekly updates and mastery reports to help them monitor their children’s progress at home.
The program will be implemented in public schools already using Khan Academy Philippines, with priority given to campuses under GBF’s flagship Class Builder program. More than 100 public-school teachers and around 3,000 learners in key Metro Manila divisions are expected to participate this school year.
“The GBF Class Builder was co-designed with our DepEd teachers so it is very grounded in their reality of having overloaded schedules, no time for training and teaching subjects outside their specialization. We hope to ease our teachers’ burden and help develop their content mastery and pedagogy through an integrated approach using both the teachers guide and lesson materials working hand in hand to train our teachers,” Grace Colet, GBF’s executive director, said.
Class Builder helps teachers improve classroom instruction through micro-coaching, ready to use lesson materials and content review sessions, while MathTalino complements it by giving students personalized AI practice and teachers continuous support in day-to-day instruction.
Khan Academy’s founder and CEO Geraldine Acuña-Sunshine said MathTalino demonstrates how innovation and collaboration can transform learning.
“By combining world-class technology with teacher empowerment, MathTalino shows what can be possible when data, innovation, and commitment come together in the classroom. This is not just about closing learning gaps—it’s about proving that every child can achieve excellence with the right support,” she said.
The partnership between GBF and Khan Academy underscores their shared commitment to help public school students build confidence in math, improve foundational skills and prepare for future learning success.
