SM’s 1st Sensory Lab opens at Mall of Asia
MANILA, Philippines — SM Supermalls is set to open its first Sensory Lab at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay as part of efforts to make its malls more inclusive.
SM Sensory Lab is a dedicated space designed to provide a calm and comfortable space for individuals with sensory sensitivities, including those with autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder and anxiety disorder.
It features a thoughtfully designed environment aimed at reducing sensory overload and providing comfort for individuals with sensory sensitivities.
Developed in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the National Council on Disability Affairs and the Autism Society Philippines, the Sensory Lab will be equipped with soft lighting to minimize visual overstimulation and a quiet space to help reduce auditory triggers.
It will be open free of charge to children and adults with sensory sensitivities accompanied by their guardians or caregivers.
“The SM Sensory Lab represents our vision of inclusivity and care. Through this calming space, we hope to create an environment where every visitor — especially those with sensory sensitivities — feels safe, supported and truly welcome,” SM Supermalls president Steven Tan said.
SM Mall of Asia will serve as the pilot site for the SM Sensory Lab, with similar spaces expected to be rolled out in other SM malls nationwide.
“SM Mall of Asia is proud to lead this effort toward more inclusive malling experiences. We believe that true hospitality means ensuring everyone — regardless of their needs — has a place where they can feel comfortable and cared for,” Tan said.
SM Supermalls, one of Southeast Asia’s largest mall operators, currently operates 89 malls across the country.
Meanwhile, SM Investments Corp., the parent company of the SM Group, has been recognized recently for its excellence in sustainability reporting, while embracing transparency as a cornerstone of responsible business.
SM Investments earned the Platinum Award for Asia’s Best Materiality Reporting at the 11th Asia Sustainability Reporting Awards, which is regarded as the region’s most respected platform for recognizing excellence in sustainability reporting.
“We see sustainability as an ongoing journey of creating impact that endures. This recognition strengthens our resolve to remain transparent and accountable as we work to deliver meaningful value to our customers, partners and communities across the country,” SM Investments president and chief executive officer Frederic DyBuncio said.
