Globe’s new 5G tech posts gigabit speeds

MANILA, Philippines — Telco-to-tech provider Globe Telecom Inc. plans to bring the 5.5G technology in the country after testing its capability of providing gigabit levels of internet speed.
Globe yesterday said it has piloted what the telco industry calls as 5G Advanced, also known as 5.5G, to see for itself the quality and speed it can generate.
The pilot, held at Bonifacio Global City, clocked in a download speed of about 2.5 Gbps – enough for Globe to consider introducing the technology to Filipinos.
Globe president and CEO Carl Raymond Cruz said 5.5G has the capability to become the future of connectivity in the Philippines. The technology can deliver for all kinds of uses, whether for everyday applications or enterprise-level requirements, he said.
Cruz added that Globe is testing 5.5G to cement its 5G leadership. When pitted against 4G, 5G provides high-speed, low-latency connectivity, allowing consumers to do more on the web, from loading apps quicker, to playing games smoother.
“Globe has consistently demonstrated its commitment to technological leadership, as it is always standing at the forefront of telecommunications technology in the Philippines,” Cruz said.
“We continue to introduce and implement cutting-edge innovations that redefine connectivity to empower Filipinos,” he added.
At gigabit levels of speed, Cruz said consumers can stream movies and play games without any lag, and this quality can be maximized by individuals learning and working online.
For enterprises, Cruz said 5.5G can support newest innovations like extended reality, internet of things, self-driving cars, among others. As such, Globe believes investing in 5.5G can unlock multiple uses, as Filipinos become reliant on digital services.
Worldwide, 5.5G is becoming a hit among developed economies. Citing a report from the Global Mobile Suppliers Association, Globe said there are six operators globally that have activated the technology for commercial purposes, while 20 others are in the process of testing its potential.
