MANILA, Philippines — Motorcycle taxi service leader Angkas has brought in e-wallet giant GCash as a payment option to promote cashless transactions for daily commute.

GCash yesterday said the e-wallet may now be used as payment for Angkas, strengthening the tie-up between two homegrown digital platforms.

Now, commuters who book with Angkas no longer have to top up load into their accounts from a bank or e-wallet, which usually demands additional fees.

Commuters have to tap the cash button on the Angkas app to change their mode of payment, and they have to link their GCash to pay directly from the e-wallet. Next, they would be asked to put in their mobile number and GCash pin, along with a one-time pin to proceed with the linking.

Finally, a pop-up should appear on the screen to indicate whether GCash was successfully added as a payment option. Both Angkas and GCash reminded their customers to keep their mobile and one-time pins to themselves for the security of their transactions.

Angkas CEO George Royeca said the partnership with GCash removes the hassle for commuters and riders of having to bring cash and counting change to settle trips.

“We are always looking to enhance our customer service, and partnering with GCash for a secure cashless payment is a great solution,” Royeca said.

“Nearly everyone uses GCash these days. It is incredibly convenient for riders and passengers. It removes the hassle of handling cash and looking for change,” he added.

Angkas is one of the biggest tech-based transport in the Philippines, leading the sunrise industry of motorcycle taxi service. The operator maintains a fleet of about 26,000 riders, catering to the transport demand in urban areas, particularly Metro Manila.
