MANILA, Philippines — The government’s energy efficiency measures have yielded about P400 million in cost savings in the first quarter, according to the Department of Energy (DOE).

Pursuant to Administrative Order (AO) 15, agencies are directed to fast-track the implementation of the government energy management program (GEMP) efforts to ensure the efficient energy use.

The DOE said the government’s electricity usage was lower by around 31 gigawatt -hours from January to March, or equivalent to roughly P365 million in cost savings.

Meanwhile, more than half a billion liters of fuel were said to have been conserved during the quarter, resulting in nearly P35 million in savings.

Under the GEMP, government-wide electricity and fuel consumption will be reduced by at least 10 percent through strategic energy efficiency and conservation measures.

“Deploying strategies to enhance energy efficiency in government buildings and facilities could further lead to substantial savings for the government, creating new jobs, and reducing carbon emissions,” the DOE said.

To further promote the objectives of AO 15, the DOE is set to hold the first regional GEMP summit for energy efficiency and conservation (EEC) professionals in Mandaue City, Cebu.

The summit aims to gather EEC professionals from the public sector to address challenges and capitalize on opportunities in implementing EEC projects in government buildings and offices.

In a statement, Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla said EEC professionals in the public sector have the responsibility to “lead by example and inspire broader societal change.”

“By demonstrating the tangible benefits of energy management, this summit will foster momentum for the wider adoption of sustainable solutions and practices within the government sector,” Lotilla said.
