MANILA, Philippines — Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. (MRSGI), the Gaisano-led supermarket operator, has expanded its footprint in Cavite with a new mini-mart format.

MRSGI opened on Aug. 22 its newly branded neighborhood mini-mart in Pearl Plaza, Lancaster New City in General Trias, Cavite.

The new mini-mart format was developed in response to consumers’ preference to shop closer to home for their basic daily needs.

The neighborhood store, Metro Value Mart, is expected to serve the 15 barangays near Lancaster New City with international and local goods, general merchandise, home care, health and beauty, and fresh and frozen products in its 1,000-square-meter shopping space.

“We are very pleased to have a new Metro store at this location which will provide quick and convenient shopping to the residents and visitors of General Trias, and to the rest of Cavite province. We hope that the addition of the Metro Valuemart will contribute to a more vibrant and thriving local economy,” said Manuel Alberto, president and COO of MRSGI..

General Trias has 33 barangays with a population of 450,583 as of the 2020 Census.

The new store is the third Metro store in Cavite, and the 62nd store nationwide for the giant retailer.

MRSGI, previously known as Gaisano Metro, is a retail company that built its first Metro Department Store and Supermarket in Colon, Cebu City in 1982.

It has grown to own and operate over 60 branches of supermarkets, department stores, and hypermarkets in Luzon and Visayas with heightened presence in Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, National Capital Region (NCR), Central Visayas, Calabarzon, and the Bicol Region.

At present, the company’s business is divided into three complementary retail formats. These include a supermarket format operated under the Metro Supermarket and Metro Fresh N Easy brand names; a department store format operated under Metro Department Store; and a hypermarket format operated under Super Metro.

As of the end of 2021, MRSGI had a total of 10 stores in Metro Manila, 12 stores in other parts of Luzon, and 39 stores in the Visayas, bringing the company’s total store count to 61.
