Maynilad starts Manila sewerage rehab project

MANILA, Philippines — West zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. is earmarking nearly P1 billion to rehabilitate Manila’s sewerage system.

Maynilad recently unveiled its Central Manila Sewerage System (CMSS) Rehabilitation Project worth P969 million.

The CMSS Rehabilitation project involves the upgrade of approximately 9,600 linear meters of sewer lines within 30 barangays in parts of Sta. Cruz and Malate areas in Manila.

The project is intended to ensure the sewerage system’s continued reliability, and to accommodate a larger volume of wastewater generated by the increasing number of households and establishments in the area.

Targeted for completion in June 2021, the project will help sustain sewerage coverage expansion in the west zone and reduce pollution load in the Manila Bay.

Maynilad’s CMSS Rehabilitation project also supports the clean-up activities in the city, the priority area of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

It is part of Maynilad’s long-term wastewater management program,which seeks to protect community health and the environment through the proper treatment of effluents in compliance with the continuing Supreme Court mandamus to clean up, rehabilitate and preserve Manila Bay.

The local government of Manila has assured Maynilad of its full support for the project, notwithstanding the possible impact on traffic conditions.

To date, Maynilad has already invested more than P41 billion for the improvement and expansion of the wastewater infrastructure, including the ongoing construction of new sewage treatment plants in Valenzuela, Las Piñas, and Cupang and Tunasan in Muntinlupa.
