MANILA, Philippines — Utility companies Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Co. said Wednesday they will appeal the Supreme Court ruling slapping them with hefty fines for violating the Philippine Clean Water Act.

In separate disclosures to the stock exchange, Manila Water and Metro Pacific Investments Corp. — which has majority stake in Maynilad — said they will seek the reversal of the SC ruling by filing their respective motion for consideration by October 2.

Last month, the SC upheld the decision of the Court of Appeals and ruled that Maynilad, Manila Water and regulatory Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System violated Section 8 of the Clean Water Act for not building enough sewage lines.

In its decision penned by Associate Justice Ramon Paul Hernando, the high court told Maynilad and the MWSS to pay a penalty of P921 million while another P921-million fine was imposed on Manila Water and the MWSS.

The SC said the fine shall be paid within 15 days from the receipt of the ruling.
