SRA sets roadshows

MANILA, Philippines – The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) will conduct a series of roadshows as it fully implements the Sugarcane Industry Development Act (SIDA) to ensure active participation from the industry stakeholders.

The SIDA, which took effect in April 2015, lays down the conditions for the maximization of sugarcane resources in the Philippines.

It also seeks to promote the competitiveness of the sugarcane industry through improved productivity, product diversification, job generation, and increased efficiency of sugar mills.

SRA administrator Ma. Regina Bautista-Martin said the main programs are focused on infrastructure such as farm to mill roads, irrigation, drainage and loading ports; research and development of other products derived from sugar and its by-products; and human resource development.

Martin urged representatives from the various Mill District Development Councils (MDDCs), planters associations, sugar mills, and block farms, to participate as they play a crucial role.

“Without the MDDCs, this will not proceed. The MDDCs will be the network of the sugar industry stakeholders with whom they can work closely,” she said.

Meanwhile, the roadshow in the Visayas region kicked off last Jan. 5 in Bacolod City while the Mindanao roadshow will be held on Jan. 11 in Davao del Sur and on Jan. 12 in Bukidnon. The Luzon leg, meanwhile, is scheduled on Jan. 19 at the SRA Social Hall in Quezon City.

The roadshows will highlight the sources of funds for the projects, registration and accreditation of individuals eligible  to avail of the funds, liquidation of funds, and the preparation of project proposals, evaluation and implementation.
