Sumisetsu gets ISO certification

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Sumisetsu Philippines Inc. (SPI), an affiliate of Japan’s Sumitomo Densetsu Co. Ltd., has become the first organization in the Philippines to achieve the newly-released ISO 9001:2015 certification.

The ISO 9001:2015 positions the new version of the standard as an integral part of an organization’s efforts towards sustainable development and promotes it as a tool for improving overall performance.

“It encourages more internal and external stakeholder focus as part of the adoption of a risk-based approach to quality management and emphasizes the importance of adopting a quality management system as a strategic decision for an organization,” certifying body SGS Philippines  Inc. said.

Established in the country in 1990, SPI is an electrical and mechanical contractor specializing in design, installation, and maintenance services such as electrical and mechanical facilities of buildings and factories.

SPI said it has successfully maintained its ISO 9001 Quality Management System since its first certificate on Dec. 1, 2003 from SGS Philippines.

SPI president Takuro Suzuki said the company identifies the addition of risk-based thinking as one of the most valuable changes in new version of the ISO management system, helping the SPI team to clearly identify and to control both internal and external threats to the company.

Organizations that are currently ISO 9001:2008 certified have three years, from formal publication of ISO 9001:2015, to transfer to the new version of the standard.

Based on the current publication schedule, the transition period will end in September 2018.
