MANILA, Philippines – The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Tuesday issued a new limited edition P10 commemorative circulation coin for the 150th birth anniversary of Philippine hero Miguel Malvar.
The central bank announced the Miguel Malvar commemorative coins’ release on Monday and informed the public that it will be available in its offices and branches particularly at the Cash Department - BSP Main Office in Manila and Security Plant Complex, Quezon City; Davao and Cebu Regional Offices; and Lucena and Iloilo branches, starting December 22, Tuesday.
BSP Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo said BSP will issue 10 million pieces of the limited edition P10 coins.
Guinigundo also disclosed that the coin’s unit cost of production is at P4.23 per piece since it comes with a gold inner surface and a silver outer edge composed of copper, aluminum and nickel.
“The BSP is very much honored by the privilege of minting these coins,” Guinigundo said.
The commemorative coin’s obverse side will show the portrait of Malvar and the markings “10-Piso”, “REPUBLIKA NG PILIPINAS and “Heneral Miguel Malvar” while its reverse side bears the new seal of the BSP and the markings “150 taon,” “1865-2015,” and the “Monument of Malvar.”
Malvar was the last Filipino general to surrender to the American forces during the revolution. Malvar took over the command of the revolutionary forces after Emilio Aguinaldo was captured and other Filipino generals surrendered. His valor exemplified resilience and patriotism that serve as inspiration to Filipinos.
BSP commemorates significant events and heroic Filipinos in the Philippine history through minting of coins, medals or overprints on banknotes.
The latest coin to be minted was Pope Francis’s state or pastoral visit this year. The central bank also issued coins for the 150th year of National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal in 2011, the 150th year of Philippine Hero Andres Bonifacio in 2013, 150th year of Philippine Hero Apolinario Mabini, 70th Anniversary of the Leyte Gulf Landing and Bagong Bayani commemorative coins in honor of overseas Filipinos in 2014.
