Maynilad trims NRW

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - West zone water concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. has succeeded in reducing its non-revenue water (NRW) to 33 percent in 2014 from 35 percent the previous year.

Last year, the water company recovered 117 million liters of water per day (MLD), enough to supply the needs of 491,400 persons.

The volume, Maynilad said, is enough to fill 47 Olympic-size swimming pools.

Maynilad last year replaced 170 kilometers of old pipes and repaired 37,000 leaks across the West Zone.

It also replaced 236,000 water meters to address water losses due to inaccurate meter reading.

This year, the company has earmarked P3.2 billion to further reduce water loss in its concession area.

This includes P2.1 billion for the replacement of some 175 kilometers of pipelines in Caloocan, Cavite, Manila and Parañaque and P680 million for the replacement of 128,000 water meters.

“Water lost in the network is water that could have been distributed and used by our customers. Hence, we continue investing in our NRW Reduction Program, which will promote better operational efficiency and enhanced customer service,” said Maynilad president and CEO Ricky P. Vargas.

Maynilad’s approach to NRW reduction comprises asset replacement and upgrades, personnel development, and use of state-of-the-art leak detection technology.
