Calamba hospital installs solar, wind power systems

Iris Gonzales - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Global renewable energy company UGE and its partner Orion Group have installed a fully financed solar and wind system at the Calamba Doctors’ Hospital in Laguna as part of efforts to promote renewable energy in the country.

According to the project profile, the system now offsets 20 percent of the hospital’s power consumption and provides constant power supply to support the operations of the hospital, including life-saving machines.

The system consist of 150 kw grid-tie solar PV and a UGE VisionAIR3 wind turbine on six buildings, UGE said.

UGE and the Orion Group installed the project in December 2014. The hospital has an average electricity bill of $20,000  or P890,000.

“UGE designed a system to maximize installation area over six building rooftops, which eventually offset 20 percent of the hospital’s electricity bill. The system also included UGE’s award winning monitoring system ViewUGE, which transmits real-time energy production data that can be accessed through the internet from any remote location,” the company said.

The renewable energy player is working with the hospital to implement similar systems in their other medical facilities across the Philippines.

This is not the first project of UGE and Orion in the country following a number of other solar and wind project installations for leading Filipino companies, including on-site energy systems at a resort owned by developer Ayala Land Inc., and a luxury hotel in Palawan owned by the Astoria Group.

The Department of Energy (DOE), has been actively promoting renewable energy in the country.

Renewable energy projects are biomass facilities, hydropower plants, solar plants and wind farms.
