Alsons Power unit to provide electricity to Iligan City
MANILA, Philippines - Iligan Light and Power Inc. (ILPI)- the electric, distribution utility servicing the city of Iligan, has chosen to source up to 27 megawatts (MW) of power from the Alsons Power Group’s 210 MW Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) coal-fired power plant in Maasim, Sarangani.
A power sales agreement (PSA) between ILPI and SEC was signed on July 15, 2014. The agreement, which has a 25-year duration, is subject to approval by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).
The city of Iligan, with a population of more than 320,000, currently requires around 37 MW of power. SEC’s 210 coal-fired power plant currently undergoing construction in Maasim, Sarangani is one of only two power plants that will be operating by 2015 to help provide a sustainable and lasting solution to the power crisis that has been plaguing Mindanao since 2010.
At $570 million, the SEC plant is the single largest investment in the province of Sarangani and the entire Region 12. The SEC plant will begin operating on Oct. of 2015 with an initial capacity of 105 MW. The SEC power facility will reach its full 210-MW capacity in the latter part of 2016.
When it commences commercial operations in 2015, SEC will be providing power to over 3.7 million people covering Iligan City, General Santos City, the entire province of Sarangani, key municipalities of South Cotabato, the entire province of Compostela Valley, the whole of Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur, and most areas of Davao del Norte including the cities of Samal and Tagum.
Aside from the SEC plant, Alsons Power is developing the 105 MW San Ramon Power, Inc. coal-fired power plant in Zamboanga City. Alsons Power currently operates three diesel plants in Mindanao: Mapalad Power Corporation’s 103 MW plant in Iligan City, the 55 MW Southern Philippines Power Corporation facility in Alabel, Sarangani, and the 100 MW power plant of the Western Mindanao Power Corp. in Zamboanga City. All three diesel plants are contributing to help alleviate the power shortage in Mindanao.
