Toshiba to expand mfg plant output in Phl

MANILA, Philippines - Japanese engineering and electronics firm Toshiba Corp. is looking to expand the output of its hard disk drive manufacturing facility in the Philippines.

Toshiba Corp. chairman Atsutoshi Nishida said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on East Asia held in Manila last week that the firm intends to increase the production output of its facility which manufactures hard disk drives located at the Laguna Technopark - Special Economic Zone.

“I think we can grow our business much much more because although we are mainly manufacturing hard disk drive, but this will be replaced in the long long future by SSD (solid state drives) which we are already manufacturing right now, in the Philippines,” Nishida said.

He said exports from its hard disk drive facility have reached $2.3 billion, making it the second top exporter in the country.

Last month, Toshiba Corp.’s subsidiary Toshiba Information Equipment Philippines Inc. with plant site at the Laguna Technopark – Special Economic Zone filed an application with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority to be granted pioneer status for the production of new generation 2.5-inch hard disk drive.

Toshiba Information Equipment is engaged in the production of cutting-edge storage devices as well as other electronic devices.

Toshiba Corp. provides a wide range of products and services on a global basis in five business domains: energy and infrastructure; community solutions; healthcare systems and services; electronic devices and components; and lifestyle products and services.
