Nearly 3M Filipinos jobless - gov't data

MANILA, Philippines - Nearly 3 million Filipinos are unemployed in January 2014, latest data from the government on Tuesday said.

According to the Labor Force Survey of the National Statistics Office, unemployment rate in the country rose to 7.5 percent (2.969 million)  from 7.1 percent (2.776 million) in January 2013.

"The January 2014 LFS also revealed that among the regions, the National Capital Region had the lowest employment rate in January 2014 at 88.8 percent. Three other regions, namely, Ilocos Region (90.7 percent), CALABARZON (91.1 percent), and Central Luzon (91.2 percent) had rates lower than the national figure," the NSO said.

Most of the unemployed persons (63.9 percent) were male.

Underemployed persons, on the other hand, decreased from 7.464 million to 7.101 million.

Underemployed persons are those who express the desire to have additional hours of work in their present job, or to have additional job, or to have a new job with longer working hours are considered underemployed.
