Car sales up 27.1 pct in January
MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Car sales rose by 27.1 percent on year to 15,631 units, the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI) said today.
"The increase was due to the sustained enthusiasm of consumers and the prospect of better business this year," CAMPI President Rommel Gutierrez said in a statement.
Sales of passenger cars went up by 26.4 percent on year to 5, 296 units while sales of commercial vehicles grew by 27.4 percent on year to 10,335 units.
Japanese car maker Toyota Motors Philippines Corp. led the industry with a 45.15-percent market share, followed by Mitsubishi Motors with 21.81 percent, and Ford Motors with 6.88 percent.
The Philippine auto industry is targeting to increase sales by 10 percent this year.
