Maynilad cuts NRW to 38%

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - West Zone water concessionare Maynilad Water Services. Inc. has further reduced its Non-Revenue Water (NRW) in 2013 and is aiming to further reduce physical water losses in its concession area this year.

The company announced yesterday that it was able to recover 140 million liters of water per day (MLD) in 2013, enough to supply the requirements of about 140,000 customers. This lowered the physical water loss rate in its concesssion area to 38 percent last year from 43 percent in 2012.

The recovered volume in 2013 was used to provide for the water needs of communities in Manila, Malabon, Navotas, Caloocan, Quezon City, Muntinlupa, Las Piñas and parts of Cavite.

In 2012, Maynilad was able to recover 120 million liters of water daily. This year, the company aims to lower its NRW rate to 36 percent.

Last year, Maynilad spent around P2 billion on its NRW management program to curb physical water losses. Another P1 billion was spent on pipe replacement projects while the remainder of the program budget was spent on meter management and the establishment of District Metered Areas (DMA), and repair of leaking pipes.

“Rehabilitation of ageing network while expanding water services is very challenging. But because of our aggressive NRW program, we are able to meet that challenge,” said Maynilad president and CEO Ricky Vargas.

This year, Maynilad is spending P2.2 billion to reduce its NRW rate. The reduction program covers meter and pressure management, active leakage control, primary line assessment, selective pipe replacement, and district metered area management.
