Capiz power co-op lauds NGCP for Yolanda assistance

MANILA, Philippines - The Capiz Electric Cooperative has lauded the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), the country’s power grid operator, for assistance extended to the cooperative at the height of Super Typhoon Yolanda.

Capelco’s board of directors issued a resolution thanking NGCP for its assistance in the form of relief goods as well as repairing transmission lines and substation equipment.

NGCP sent 200 relief packs for the employees of one of its power customers. The relief packs contained bottled water and food for Capelco employees who were devastated by the typhoon.

“The Capelco board would like to convey their deepest appreciation to NGCP for its humanitarian gesture extended to Capelco employees,” the cooperative said in the resolution.

NGCP welcomed the gesture from the electric cooperative.

“We, at NGCP, appreciate the board resolution. It only shows the strong relationship that we have with Capelco. NGCP is always ready to help, in any form, to its customers whom we consider as partners in the industry,” said Cynthia Perez-Alabanza, NGCP spokesperson and head of corporate communications.

Capelco is a non-stock, non-profit electric cooperative located in Panit-an, Capiz. Its franchise area covers 16 municipalities in Capiz and Roxas City. During the onslaugh of Yolanda, around 80 percent to 90 percent of Capelco’s posts were toppled.

The destructive typhoon struck on Nov. 8.

NGCP is a privately-owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining and developing the country’s power transmission network.

It is a joint venture between State Grid Corp. of China and One Taipan Holdings of Henry Sy Jr., the eldest son of mall magnate Henry Sy.

The company won a 25-year concession to run the country’s transmission assets after it took over the management of the country’s national transmission network in 2008 from state-owned National Transmission Co.
