The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Council of Management (Philcoman) has invited four speakers to interact with its officers, members and guests from the government and private sectors, the diplomatic corps, Congress, business and the media during its 59th founding anniversary and 39th National Management Congress on Nov. 12, at the Grand Ballroom, Century Park Hotel, 599 P. Ocampo St., Malate, Manila.

Highlighting the whole day affair is the awarding of the coveted Management Man of the Year (2013-2014) to successful businessman and former Philippine Ambasador to Laos Antonio L. Cabangon Chua and the interaction with the noted four speakers: Dr. Benjamin Diokno, former budget secretary and professor of the UP School of Economics, who will talk about the state of the Philippine economy in relation to Philcoman’s Congress theme: “Managing an Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth and National Security;”

Dr. Ernie Gonzales, post-doctoral fellow of the Asia Research Center, London School of Economics and Political Science and UP-Manila graduate program professor, will speak on “Green Economy in the Blue World of Philippine Archipelago;”

Gen. Galileo Kintanar (ret.), former intelligence chief of the armed services and now a research-academician, will discuss Retrospect and Prospects in National Security; and businessman-industrialist Antonio “Tonyboy” Cojuangco, chairman Statecraft Asia Ventures Inc., will touch on Nation-building through Community-based Anchor Business for Processing Products Export.

According to Gonzales, the Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands with vast aquatic resources five times bigger than land.  “Therefore,” he said,  “her global competitiveness and inroad to green industrialization must be through her aquatic resources.”

In a paper he prepared for the Philcoman, Gonzales defined the country’s paradigm shift from the economic fundamentals of continental lands toward the economics of vast aquatic resources and thousands islands to create modern industries in fisheries and aquaculture, energy from the sea, modernization of seaports, shipping and fishery industries.

In a dialogue with Philcoman officers, Kintanar said: “There’s a need to create a sense of national security in the country because it has critical implications on the economic life of the nation in particular and the survival of the State in general.”

In his latest book National Security (Retrospect and Prospects, Part II) which he will launch at the Philcoman Congress, Kintanar explained the country’s past, present and future realities of National Security and its global dimension.

Registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Philcoman is a non-profit, non-political federation of professional and technological societies, management developments, institutions, academe, business enterprises and professional managers dedicated to the development of management and improvement of its practices in all aspects of the Philippine society.

Philcoman was founded in 1954 by 10 associations and organized groups under the inspirational guidance of Dr. Lilian M. Gilbreth and Dr. Daniel M. Braum, (the latter was chief of the Training branch, US Government’s General Services Administration), both of whom were on the extended assignment in the Philippines, provided the inspirational guidance. Dean Cesar H. Concio was the founder and the first Philcoman President serving until 1963.

Affiliated with the World Council of Management, Philcoman has chalked up a continuing series of achievements in its 59th year history. In fulfillment of its mission to propagate the principles and practice of scientific management in the Asian region, Philcoman has hosted two international management congresses, conducted strategic management seminars and held the effective program on negotiation and conflict management, among others.
