Manila Water to invest P1.9B on sewer network

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - East Zone water concessionaire Manila Water Co. Inc. is investing P1.9 billion for the construction of a 12-kilometer sewer network in Taguig, Makati and nearby cities.

The Taguig North Sewer Network 3 Project would be the first major sewer network system project to be built by Manila Water since it started implementing its Wastewater Master Plan.

Construction of the project is slated between 2014 to 2016.

The project will also adopt a separate system approach that will collect domestic wastewater through a dedicated sewer network.

Abelardo Basilio, Manila Water Strategic Asset Management Group director, said the projects would help the company expand its service coverage in its east zone concession area.

“This is also the first time that Manila Water will use a new technology for sewer network, a trenchless methodology in pipelaying to reduce the traffic impact and inconvenience to commuters,” said Basilio.

“Manila Water believes that the project will largely contribute to the improvement of the quality of water bodies in the metropolis as this will help protect the environment by preventing contamination and pollution of the three rivers in its concession area,” he added.

Manila Water said the Taguig North Sewer Network 3 Project could treat up to 75 million liters of wastewater per day catering to the treatment requirements of  half a million residents in the cities of Taguig, Makati and nearby areas.

The company said the project was approved by the National Capital Region – Regional Development Council (NCR-RDC).

Manila Water’s east zone concession area includes parts of Quezon City and Makati, the southeastern parts of Manila, Taguig, Pateros, Marikina, Pasig, San Juan, Mandaluyong, and Rizal province.
