Mitsubishi recalls Mirage due to faulty sensors

MANILA, Philippines - Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) is recalling 1,420 units of the subcompact hatchback Mirage to correct faulty front wheel speed sensors and ensure the Antilock Brake System (ABS) is in good working condition.

In a statement, MMPC said the recall affects units sold from November last year until March of this year.

“The purpose of this safety recall is to replace the front wheel speed sensors,” it said.

The recall is being conducted as the sensors have been found to have insufficient waterproofing if penetrated by water from rain and or during carwash which may cause the ABS not to function properly.

No accident has been reported related to the sensors, but MMPC is recalling the vehicles as directed by its principal, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. of Japan.

The measure is in line with the firm’s proactive commitment to quality and consumer safety.

MMPC will release the Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) of the Mirage vehicles affected by the campaign in its website at www.mitsubishi-motors.com.ph.

Customers may enter their VIN in the website to check if their unit is included in the recall.

All affected customers will likewise be notified in writing through registered mail.

Hikosaburo Shibata, MMPC president and chief executive officer, said the firm has already mobilized its customer relations department to contact all the affected customers.

“All the Mitsubishi Motors Philippines service centers nationwide have been alerted to do the necessary inspection and repair on all affected units,” he said.

Once the vehicle has been verified as included in the recall, owners are requested to contact the Mitsubishi Customer Care Center at telephone number 6580673 from Monday through Friday, between 7 am to 4 pm to schedule the repair of their unit in any authorized Mitsubishi Service Center.

The replacement procedure is estimated to take an hour and is free of charge. The Mirage was declared Car of the Year at the Manila International Auto Show 2013.

MMPC is banking heavily on the Mirage to achieve higher sales this year.

Earlier, Taizo Furuhashi, MMPC executive vice president for marketing, said the firm is aiming for sales to reach not less than 40,000 units this year.

MMPC sales last year reached 34,915 units.

As of end-February, MMPC has sold 6,404 units.
