Phl could be mfg hub for aviation parts

Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - An association that will represent manufacturers of aircraft parts has been formed with the aim of promoting the country as another manufacturing hub for aviation parts and components in the Southeast Asian region.

The Aerospace Industries Association of the Philippines (AIAP) said in a statement yesterday that the group was established to serve as an intermediary body that would work between aerospace industries and the government.

The group was formed to advance the cause and developmental objectives of the aerospace industry.

“The key objectives of AIAP is to understand, build consensus and provide leadership on aerospace policy issues of interest to the industry, increase the country’s profile on the world stage by communicating its air and space accomplishments and by promoting the Philippine aerospace companies in international markets,” it said.

Developing the local aerospace industry can help transform the Philippines as another strategic manufacturing hub of aerospace and aviation parts and components in Southeast Asia.

The group noted that the over $1 trillion global aerospace and aviation business could provide gains for the country by creating jobs.

It also cited that given the nature of manufacturing of aerospace products requiring highly skilled manpower, the Philippines would see an improvement in the capabilities of local labor.

“Through progressive phases, with support expected from government our local industries which are export-oriented can show very competitive business performances that will entice more foreign operations to locate outsourcing operations here,” it said.

John Lee, one of the founding members of the AIAP and the president of Applied Machining Corp., said government support would be necessary to help the industry grow.

“Without government support through relevant policies to ensure its growth and development, this industry will not prosper,” he said.

He said the AIAP intends to come up with a strategic plan next year for the industry.

The group would also focus on the following areas: building the supply chain; promoting partnerships among buyers and suppliers; enhancing business environment by pushing for government policy reforms as well as improving skills of workforce and upgrading of systems.

The AIAP was incorporated in August and has 36 members.
