Wage reform measure for bus drivers backed

MANILA, Philippines - Valenzuela City Mayor Sherwin T. Gatchalian has expressed his support for the wage reform measure being imposed by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on bus drivers and conductors, saying that is for the public good.

The measure provides, starting July 1 a “two-tiered” wage system for bus drivers and conductors in National Capital Region.

Department Order 118-12, D.O. 118-12, otherwise known as the Rules and Regulations Governing the Employment and Working Conditions of Drivers and Conductors in the Public Utility Bus Transport Industry, provides for fixed wages and performance-based compensation schemes, occupational safety and health, social security benefits, and other labor rights for bus drivers, conductors, and other bus transport workers.

Gatchalian said the new compensation scheme will lead to just compensation, improved working conditions, and enhance road safety for bus drivers, conductors, and the traveling public.

“It’s a win-win solution. Matutulungan nito ang mga kababayan nating bus drivers at conductors para maiangat ang kanilang kabuhayan at higit sa lahat napoprotektahan nito ang kaligtasan ng mga pasahero,” Gatchalian added.
