NGCP allots P355 million for substation upgrade

MANILA, Philippines - The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) will invest P355 million to increase its operational capacity in a substation in Southern Luzon.

“The installation of additional equipment is expected to ensure efficient, stable and reliable delivery of electrical power to its load center,” NGCP said in a statement.

“Likewise, additional substation capacity will help to avert overloading of the existing transformers,” it added.

The Naga Substation expansion project is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of this year.

Specifically, the upgrade involves the installation of an additional 100-million volt-ampere transformer, nine units 230-kilovolt (kV) and three units 69-kV power circuit breakers and substation accessories.

The project is under NGCP’s Luzon Substation Expansion I, which includes Naga Substation and six other substations in Northern Luzon.

NGCP said the Luzon Substation Expansion project aims to accommodate load growth and N-1 contingency of various substations.

Early this week, the grid operator said it has completed the repair of Las Piñas and Quezon City substations, which will ensure the availability of power supply in Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) service areas.

The substations malfunctioned early this year but outages were averted through emergency contingencies.
