MasterCard reports strong Q2

MANILA, Philippines - MasterCard recently announced second quarter 2011 results for the Asia/Pacific, Middle East & Africa (APMEA)1 region. For the quarter ending June 30, 2011, the region registered growth in gross dollar volume (GDV) (24.7 percent), purchase volume2 (27.2 percent), purchase transactions (18.8 percent), cash transactions (21.3 percent) and cards issued (11.1 percent) versus the same period in 2010. As of June 30, 2011, 313 million MasterCard cards (excluding Maestro® and Cirrus®) had been issued by MasterCard customer financial institutions across APMEA. Cardholders in the region made 1,395 million purchase transactions in the second quarter of 2011 and are able to use their MasterCard cards at 32.7 million acceptance locations worldwide. At the end of the second quarter, the Maestro® brand mark appeared on 220 million cards in APMEA. Consumers can now make debit point of sale purchases with their Maestro-branded cards at 2.2 million merchant locations in the APMEA region. “Our results for the second quarter reflect continued improvement in our performance,” said Vicky Bindra, president, APMEA, MasterCard Worldwide. “Despite the aftermath of natural disasters in Australia, Japan and New Zealand as well as unrest in the Middle East and North Africa earlier in the year, MasterCard has continued to forge ahead with double-digit growth. The strong performance is indicative of our sound business model and the value we bring to our partners and consumers in advancing the way commerce is conducted.”
