Nokia reports 5% hike in Q3 net sales

MANILA, Philippines - Nokia reported a global net sales of 10.3 billion euro for the third quarter of 2010, which showed a five percent increase compared with 9.8 billion euro in the third quarter 2009, and a three percent increase compared with 10.0 billion euro in the second quarter 2010.

Devices and services recorded net sales of 7.2 billion euro, up four percent year-on-year and six percent sequentially which was primarily driven by higher average selling price (ASP).

Services net sales contributed to the total devices and services net sales with 159 million euro in the third quarter 2010. Although Nokia’s preliminary estimated mobile device market share was 30 percent down from an estimated 34 percent in the third quarter 2009; ASP of mobile devices including service revenues went up to 65 euro, increased two percent year-on-year and up six percent sequentially.

Nokia total mobile device volumes increased to 110.4 million units, representing an increase of two percent year-on-year and decrease of one percent sequentially. And of the total industry mobile device volumes, converged mobile device (smartphone and mobile computer) volumes also increased to 26.5 million units, up 61 percent year-on-year and 10 percent sequentially.

The third quarter of 2010 includes many of the company’s significant operations. Nokia started shipments of the Nokia N8, the first Nokia smartphone based on the next-generation Symbian software. The new software also introduced Nokia C7, Nokia C6 and Nokia E7 that features touch screen display and the Nokia ClearBlack technology. Nokia X3 Touch & Type and C3 Touch & Type, affordable mobile phones with a unique combination of a touch screen and traditional phone keypad were also launched.

A renewed Ovi Store was introduced which debuted on the Nokia N8 and is coming to its other smartphones based on the new Symbian software. The expansion of Ovi Maps around the world happened during the quarter as well.

Partnerships are important operations made within the quarter. Nokia acquired Motally Inc., provider of mobile analytics services; deepened collaboration with Renesas Electronics Corp., a leading supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions; divested Metacarta’s enterprise business to Qbase Holdings LLC; and formed an alliance with Intuit Inc.

Nokia received several recognitions: A second “Technology Supersector Leader” award from the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes Review 2010 and ranked number one for the third time in The Economic Times-Brand Equity’s annual ‘Most Trusted Brands’ survey for 2010 in India.
