Manila Water builds P570-million reservoir in QC

MANILA, Philippines - Ayala-controlled Manila Water Co., Inc. is constructing a new P570-million reservoir in Quezon City that is targeted for completion in 2012.

The new reservoir will increase water reliability and boost distribution efficiency of the East Zone water utility concessionaire.

Quezon City Mayor Herbert M. Bautista was present during the groundbreaking ceremony of the new reservoir that will replace the historic old San Juan Reservoir along N. Domingo street.

The old San Juan reservoir was built in 1937 before the start of World War II.

“We are supportive of the efforts of Manila Water for undertaking projects and programs that exemplify the excellent partnership of the public and private sector and provide benefits not only to residents of Quezon City but to the people of Metro Manila,” Mayor Bautista said.

The old San Juan reservoir was used by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) as part of the central distribution system – supplying mostly the western part of the metropolis until the distribution system was divided between Manila Water and DMCI-led Maynilad Water Services.

Manila Water will build a bigger reservoir with greater holding capacity of 111 million liters, 19 million liters more than the capacity of the old San Juan reservoir.

With the increase in capacity, the new reservoir will help reduce the carrying load of the major PG-6 water mainline, the main artery that supplies potable water all the way to the Marikina-Pasig area.

The new reservoir will be able to support the increasing demand for additional supply and further boost water supply reliability for Quezon City, San Juan, Mandaluyong and Makati.
