Office of the Solicitor General set to rest its case vs Lucio Tan

- Michael Punongbayan -

MANILA, Philippines - The Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) will rest tomorrow its forfeiture case against business tycoon Lucio Tan tomorrow without presenting the testimony of the latter’s brother Mariano Tanenglian as evidence.

Government lawyers are scheduled to make a formal offer of evidence at 2 p.m. which means that the defense will soon be given its turn to present witnesses and other evidence in favor of the accused.

The STAR learned that the OSG is now in the process of remarking documents that will be presented to the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division.

Claiming to know something about Tan’s assets in relation to Marcos ill-gotten wealth cases, Tanenglian has offered to testify against his own brother in exchange for immunity.

However, the OSG is apparently rejecting the offer and is even asking the anti-graft court to sanction former Philippine Commission on Good Government (PCGG) lawyer Catalino Generillo Jr. who is allegedly refusing to turn over some documentary evidence in the Tan case.

Despite being replaced as the lead lawyer in the government’s cases against the Marcoses and Tan, Generillo is pushing for further presentation of evidence before the Sandiganabayan.

Generillo wants Tanenglian presented as a witness who can help identify his brother’s assets that are allegedly part of the Marcos ill-gotten wealth.

Tan, through his lawyers, expressed opposition to the same arguing that his brother is interfering in the case through intimidation.

Tanenglian is treasurer of Allied Bank and is reportedly in a feud with his brother because of business problems within the Lucio Tan group of companies.
