Brunei hosts BIMP-EAGA confab

-

MANILA, Philippines - Leading figures from the international business community will gather in Brunei to explore potential investment opportunities in the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) region during a conference and trade expo in August.

Slated for August 5-9, the conference will feature experts from the Economic Research Institute for Asean and East Asia, German Technical Cooperation and Asian Development Bank.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will play host to the 14th Bimp-Eaga Ministerial Meeting at the International Convention Centre, according to a statement from Transpower Event Management.

The business conference aims to attract 200 delegates from the business and government sectors of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and beyond.

Given the current economic slowdown, the conference will focus on current business activities within Bimp-Eaga and seek feedback from potential investors on whether Bimp-Eaga’s activities are moving in the right direction to ensure that the sub-region would have the necessary measures and infrastructure in place.

Themed “Moving Bimp-Eaga Beyond 2010”, the conference will also provide the opportunity for participants to interact with Bimp-Eaga ministers during the 14th Bimp-Eaga Ministerial Dinner on Aug. 7 and the ministerial session with private sector on Aug. 8.

In support of the theme, representatives from four major industrial clusters were anticipated: transportation infrastructure/ICT development, tourism, natural resource development and SME development. The clusters are supported by 11 working groups of industries such as fisheries, forestry, agro-industry, energy, human resource development, financial services construction, as well as air and sea linkages.

The international gathering will be held in conjunction with the 18th senior officials meeting (SOM) and the 14th Bimp-Eaga Ministerial Meeting.

Organisers believe the event is well-timed, not only in light of the major transformation of the Bimp-Eaga Roadmap, but a trade delegation from Japan, Bimp-Eaga’s dialogue partner, will also share experiences and interact with Brunei’s private sector.
