US expert to discuss current trends in nuclear energy

MANILA, Philippines – A US-based expert will discuss next week current trends and developments in nuclear energy as a source of power.

The state-run National Power Corp. (Napocor) will host the discussions, which will be attended by leading proponents of nuclear development in the country.

Napocor said the discussion will also involve prospects of reviving nuclear energy development in the Philippines.

The Philippines is planning to start up its first 600-megawatt (MW) nuclear power plant by 2025, based on Department of Energy (DOE) data.

Dr. Ian G. McKinley, the main speaker and resource person, is an executive consultant with an unusually diverse background in the multi-disciplinary science underpinning radioactive waste management.

He had worked as a member of the Nagra management team for one of the most advanced repository programs in the world.

He was also director of the International Services and Projects Division, an international consulting service, for the operation of the Grimsel Test Site and the foundation of the ITC school.

McKinley gained an internationally established reputation in nuclear waste management field with extensive experience in expert groups and advisory panels.

He also coordinated on a wide range of multi-disciplinary R&D programs.

The nuclear expert also contributed to planning, implementation, documentation or review of all major geological disposal performance assessments in Switzerland and Japan. 

He also initiated seminal geo-microbiology, radionuclide migration and natural analogue projects.

He was an author/co-author of three books and over 250 technical papers, reports, articles and book chapters.

At present, he runs McKinley Consulting, a company established in January 2005 to offer a range of technical consulting services. – Donnabelle L. Gatdula
