DA issues warning on migratory birds
The Department of Agriculture (DA) has issued an appeal to all local government units (LGUs) to keep a tight watch for migratory birds in the last quarter of this year. The migratory birds are feared to carry the dreaded avian influenza (AI) or bird flu virus.
Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap likewise appealed to the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) to keep a tight watch on the migratory birds protecting the P150-billion poultry sector that employs over 150,000 workers.
The DA claims to have intensified an information and education campaign in 25 critical areas prone to AI infection, international borders and coastlines and in areas with high concentrations of ducks.
Duck farmers are urged not to graze their flocks near the 20 critical migration areas to avoid contact with the migratory birds.
The DA has put in place additional measures to keep the country free of bird flu virus, including setting up special task forces and emergency response teams at the municipal levels to deal with possible AI outbreaks.
“If anyone sees sick bird in their area, please immediate report it to the nearest BAI office,” Yap said.
The DA also set up AI diagnostic laboratories across the country to ensure quick and accurate diagnosis and to carry out timely appropriate interventions in the event that AI virus is detected.
On top of building more avian flu diagnostic labs, the BAI is conducting table top exercises, preparedness and response planning workshops targeting the local government units.
The allied agency has a team of veterinarians undertaking a nationwide educational campaign for poultry and livestock growers on the threat and perils of the bird flu virus. In the event of a suspected outbreak, the avian influenza task force has organized a Rapid Action Team that can be mobilized and deployed within 24 hours to take the appropriate measures.
