Purisima lauds Gerber Phils for recalling products

Trade and Industry Secretary Cesar V. Purisima lauded yesterday Gerber Philippines for its decision to recall its Gerber Jars and Juices products following reports of possible product tampering.

According to Purisima, Gerber’s recall order is "a good example of good corporate social responsibility."

Purisima has ordered the Bureau of Trade Regulation and Consumer Protection (BTRCP) to coordinate closely with Gerber Philippines on the product recall.

According to Trade Undersecretary for consumer welfare Adrian S. Cristobal Jr., "we are closely monitoring the development and working closely with Gerber and the Bureau of Food and Drug Administration."

Cristobal agreed that the recall "will enhance Gerber’s brand credibility among consumers."

He added that "based on our market studies, we have learned that companies or brands that are proactive in addressing consumer complaints are most likely to generate loyalty from consumers."

Cristobal said the consumer welfare is a joint responsibility of the business sector and the general public.

He said, "business entities should ensure that they provide only quality merchandise and service to consumers."

He also urged the public to be vigilant and report unfair practices of retailers and help the DTI enforce consumer laws.
