Trophy director

NOT BUSINESS AS USUAL - Margaret Jao-Grey  -
Unable to find members of the Philippine Stock Exchange based at the Tektite Tower?

With so little action on the trading floor, try the spa within the building put up by a broker.

Ortigas & Co. Ltd. Partners chief operating officer Rex Drilon II is putting up an IT building, an alternative site to current tenants (and, therefore, consumers) in Virra Mall.

As everybody knows, Virra Mall is considered a rogue building within the Greenhills Commercial Center, largely because it is run by an association of unit owners of the former residential condominium building.

It is for this reason that Virra Mall has wash rooms comparable to the malodorous, don’t-even-think-of-it holes in Divisoria.

Among Philippine companies which have or want to have foreign investors, the trophy director to have is SGV & Co. founder Washington Sycip.

Given his background – among other things, a college graduate at age 17 and the founder of the country’s largest auditing firm – Wash Sycip is normally asked to chair the audit committee.

This powerful committee, which works closely with a company’s internal and external auditors, is always chaired by an independent director who must have financial numeracy or know-how.

Given his schedule – which is set almost a year in advance because he sits on the boards of blue chip companies here and abroad – the next time Mr. Sycip will be in town will be the week of Sept. 22.

After turning down the offer of Antonio Cojuangco to join Channel 5, soon-to-retire ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. president and chief operating officer Federico Garcia is expected to be retained by chairman and chief operating officer Eugenio Lopez III as consultant.

Gabby Lopez still has to decide who will replace Freddie Garcia as president and COO.

The next move belongs to Nestlé Phils. director for communications Pedro Dy-Liacco, who had early on insisted there be no disruption when Publicis absorbed AMA (read: That the creative team the global food, health and wellness giant has been working with at AMA stay on).

Well, the regional office of Publicis has decided to roll the waters in the Philippines, which has led to a walkout of Publicis-AMA employees except for at least one, chairman Joselito de Joya.

Here are some options open to Noy Dy-Liacco. One, he could say nothing, thereby agreeing to the Publicis revamp and keeping Nestlé as the bread-and-butter client of Publicis-AMA.

Two, he could express his unhappiness and move the Nestlé account elsewhere, maybe to the company that recently resigned Publicis-AMA employees intend to put up.
