The new base station equipment, called Nokia ConnectSite 10 base station, is more efficient than traditional outdoor cellsites. Smart is one of the very first operators in the world to adopt this solution.
"This new network solution will make digital communications much more accessible to more people. Through this, Smart will be able to install cellsites in more areas at a more rapid pace. This is in line with Smarts efforts to reach out to the rural and underserved municipalities in the country," according to Smart president and CEO Napoleon L. Nazareno,.
Nokia ConnectSites 10 base stations are smaller and less obtrusive than traditional outdoor cellsites, but when installed at top of masts, it makes for a highly cost-effective solution, especially in rural areas, as up to 40-percent savings are achieved from its use.
Furthermore, the weatherproof Nokia ConnectSite 10 base stations are tower-mounted, eliminating the need for costly space, cellsite shelter, site support and air-conditioning. As such, this also simplifies and cuts the time needed to prepare the cellsites.
Apart from mast top installation, which is the most optimal solution, the Nokia solution is also suitable for more conventional locations, such as rooftops and roadside installations, as well as those with restricted space, including walls, tunnels and roof spaces. It can be installed indoors or outdoors, making it a flexible solution for various installations.
Smart has introduced various technical innovations in order to achieve its rapid network rollout program. It has introduced next-generation technology Nokia UltraSite base stations that are about half the size of typical equipment but can handle over twice the number of subscribers. Also developed by Nokia, these base stations have been widely deployed all over the country.
To support its expansion program, Smart recently signed contracts valued at more $70 million with Nokia Networks for the installation of additional GSM facilities.
Smart is the countrys leading wireless services provider with 10 million subscribers running on its network as of June 2003. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT).
