Meralcos Telecommunications office and Substation recently passed the certification audit by the Anglo Japanese American (AJA) Registrars, Inc., a certifying body accredited under the United Kingdom accreditation scheme (UKAS).
Meralcos Telecoms office became the first telecommunications organization or service provider of fiber optic cable service in the Philippines to be certified to "ISO 9001:2000".
With the ISO certification, Telecoms customers are given the assurance that there is a quality management system (QMS) that will direct and control the activities of the organization with regards to quality; help the utility firms Telecoms office attain its vision of becoming the service provider of choice for telecommunication solutions and related services; and help Meralco generate more client in the marketing the excess capacity of its fiber optic backbone.
Meralcos Telecommunications office is the third ISO-certified organization in Meralco.
The scope of the ISO certification includes planning, design of cable route, project management, construction, operation and maintenance, materials acquisition and warehousing of fiber optic.
The fiber optic is the main backbone that serves Meralcos Telecom requirements for voice and data.
Meralcos Telecoms office plans to further expand its ISO certification to include other services such as trunked radio, microwave and telephone system.
The ISO certification was awarded to Substation Office last February 2003 for substation maintenance including all maintenance activities, facilities and equipment.
Meeting the ISO 9000 standards assures the effectiveness and efficiency of maintenance activities for al 116 substations. It also strengthens the quality and reliability of substation maintenance processes contributing to the reduction of the interruption frequency rate (IFR)/cumulative interruption time (CIT) and unused energy attributed to substation maintenance.
Although the present certification covers only substation maintenance, substation management plans to extend the scope to include design and construction of substations.
Other Meralco offices that are ISO certified are the MML Development Center and Corporate Meter.
AJA Registrars is a certifying body accredited under the United Kingdom Accreditation Scheme (UKAS) and the Joint Accreditation of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ). These are the two most prominent and recognized accreditation bodies worldwide.
