Broilers group backs RA 8435

The Philippine Association of Broiler Integrators (PABI), which comprises the major poultry producers and integrators in the country, has expressed strong support over the retention and strict implementation of RA 8435 Sec. 109 exempting payment of tariff and duties for the importation of all agricultural inputs, machines and equipment, including spare parts and renewable energy systems.

Tennyson Chen, PABI president, recently aired the group’s stand to Speaker Jose de Venecia, pointing out that "any move to discontinue the duty free privileges for agricultural inputs will derail plans for the local poultry industry to become globally competitive and sustain its modern growth."

PABI members, which include Tyson Agro-Ventures, San Miguel Foods Inc., Universal Robina Corp., and Swift Foods, recognize that some sectors, particularly corn farmers, are affected by tariff and duty exemption but claim that in the end, this will ultimately result in greater harm than benefit to consumers, the industry and the economy.
