Caltex vows win-win solution to Pandacan oil depot issue

-
Caltex Philippines said yesterday it remains a proactive and willing partner in the development and implementation of a win-win solution regarding the Pandacan terminal operations and, in particular, the concerns of safety impacting all Filipinos.

"We are acutely aware of the critical need to ensure the highest standards of safety in our operations, while at the same time working with all levels of the government to facilitate and implement programs minimizing the potential impact that an abrupt closure could have on the nation’s economy. We believe there are significant opportunities whereby both can be addressed effectively, and we are willing to work as proactive partners to demonstrate how best this can be achieved," said Timothy D. Leveille, Caltex Philippines in-country chairman.

Leveille added that all along the way, Caltex intended to continue to work closely both with the DOE, Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, the Manila city council, and other stakeholders to demonstrate in ‘tangible ways" how this can achieved.

"The feasibility of a shared operation at Pandacan that underscores our already long-standing safety record certainly represents a viable alternative, but beyond that there are other activities and programs such green buffer zone that can benefit the community as a park and encourage family-oriented activities. We are aware of the lifestyle and safety concern issues surrounding those who live adjacent to the facility and the steps we can take to address these in positive ways – and returning something to the community. When it’s seen as appropriate, we will be ready to do our part in informing all these concerned parties how these programs would work and the benefits that can result from this teamwork commitment."

Leveille added that Caltex saw all of this as being a central component of the company’s commitment to remain a proactive partner in the community. "We have been a working business partner in the Philippines for more than 80 years, and we consider ourselves an integral part of Filipino society. As has been the case in other events in the past where social, business and political concerns have emerged to become potential sticking points, we are confident we can work together to find a prudent solution that will support all interested stakeholders in amicably resolving this important issue."
