Nextel boosts Subic-Clark alliance

Trunk radio operator Nextel Communications Philippines Inc. (NCPI’s) expansion programs gained another milestone, following the activation recently of another cellsite inside the Clark Special Economic Zone in Pampanga.

Victor Reyes, Nextel vice president for sales, said that Nextel’s rollout program of its network within the vicinity of the two major economic hubs in Central Luzon, particularly Clark and Subic Bay Freeport in Zambales, is aimed at servicing the growing demand for direct connect two-way radio services by a large number of locators an business establishments.

"Nextel’s commitment to establish strategic network coverage within these areas is also in line with the current thrust of Clark Development Corp. and Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority to become the country’s premier economic center within the next few years," Reyes added.

"So far initial investments made by Nextel inside the two economic zones totaled P60 million. At least two more cellsites are planned inside Subic Freeport within the first quarter of next year. These cellsites will cost P28 million," Reyes disclosed.

CDC president Emmanuel Angeles lauded Nextel’s efforts to provide the necessary support for Clark’s communications requirements, particularly Nextel’s direct connect and its wireless internet service, Nextel Online.

"That is a welcome development, considering the high cost of communications nowadays. The opening of another telecommunications facility here should boost Clark’s efforts in ensuring that the telecommunications requirements of investors inside the zone are sufficiently provided," Angeles said.

A number of locator-investors inside Clark and Subic have preferred to avail themselves of Nextel’s communication services due to its features that respond to the demands of their day-to-day business operations.

With the latest activation of another cellsite inside Clark, communities and other cities such as Angeles City, San Fernando and Mabalacat town and nearby Tarlac province are expected to benefit from this development.
