The countrys premiere surfing destination and home of the world-famous "Cloud Nine" surf break is now connected to the world as Smart Communications, Inc. announced yesterday the full operations of its cell site in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, in time for the 6th Siargao International Surfing Cup.
"With the operations of the Smart cell site, Siargao Island is now equipped with cutting edge mobile communications technology that will boost tourism and the local economy in the CARAGA region," said Rolando Peña, head for network services division of Smart Communications, Inc.
"This is part of Smarts efforts in partnering with local governments to develop telecommunications infrastructure rollout in unserved and underserved areas of the country," he added.
To provide cellular service in time for the Siargao Surfing Cup, Smart has deployed a mobile cell site or cell-on-wheels (COW), a 900 MHz base station housed in a movable truck with a capacity for approximately 2,000 subscribers. It is now providing coverage to most of the surfing and beach front area along General Luna and the rest of the town proper.
Smart has already commenced the construction of a permanent cell site and tower in General Luna. Meanwhile, the COW will provide ample digital coverage and capacity until the permanent site is fired up.
Located north of mainland Surigao del Norte in Northeastern Mindanao, Siargao Island has been the surfing worlds best kept secret where unspoiled islands and beach hideaways are concerned. However, local and foreign tourists are trooping there in steadily increasing numbers every year in spite of its remote location.
Siargao is considered one of the top 10 surf sites in the world. Cloud Nine, located in Tuason Point is said to be comparable to the Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii with its curling breakers that soar from nine to 12 feet high.
The 6th Siargao International Surfing Cup, expected to attract top-rank international surfers worldwide, is organized by the Department of Toursm, the local government and private companies. Smart Communications is the official telecommunications provider.
The competition will also feature a kite flying festival, a food festival, a regional tourism assembly, a fashion show, Filipino games, and a trade fair and exhibit. Surfing clinics will also be conducted for surfing aficionados and beginners alike. Mary Ann Reyes
