Sky Vision sets aside P600 M for Internet cable service

- by Marigold Yao-Endriga -

Sky Vision Corp., operator of SkyCable, has set aside some P600 million for its Internet cable modem service to be launched this month initially in the country's business districts.

Called Zpdee, the new service promises to revolutionalize web surfing and electronic correspondence for some 350,000 SkyCable subscribers nationwide.

Zpdee will be rolled out in Sky franchise areas beginning with Makati and Pasig with plans to roll out in major Metro Manila villages over the next two years. Eventually, the service will be available nationwide.

Instead of modifying the existing IP network of its sister company, Sky Internet, which is built primarily for dial-up service, Sky has built a brand new Internet Protocol (IP) network to serve the requirements of cable modem users at a much faster rate.

Especially designed for heavy users and capacity hungry customers, Zpdee will allow Internet access through cable. Zpdee subscribers can download practically all programs available online including video materials, with unmatched speed.

The service also boasts of value-added services such as a TUCOWS mirror, e-mail, news, FTP/Web and chat services. The TUCOWS mirror is not available in any other cable Internet company.

TUCOWS collates updated versions of programs web surfers commonly download.

Sky Vision was incorporated on March 25, 1991 and started commercial operations in Feb. 1, 1992.

Sky provides cable television services in Metro Manila and in other parts of the country such as Cebu, Iloilo, Baguio, General Santos Tagum, Naga, Cavite, Ilocos Region, Pangasinan and Bulacan through its various cable operator subsidiaries.
