Search opens for Gesmundo's successor as chief justice
MANILA, Philippines — The Judicial and Bar Council has opened applications for the next chief justice of the Supreme Court ahead of Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo's retirement on November 6.
The JBC said applications will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on October 13.
Associate Justice Amy Lazaro-Javier is also set to retire on November 16, opening another vacancy in the high court.
Gesmundo was appointed the country's 27th chief justice by former President Rodrigo Duterte on April 5, 2021, succeeding Diosdado Peralta.
He joined the Supreme Court as an associate justice in 2017 after serving on the Sandiganbayan since 2005, where he later chaired its 7th Division.
Gesmundo previously served as assistant solicitor general and as commissioner of the Presidential Commission on Good Government on secondment from 1998 to 2001. He joined the Office of the Solicitor General after passing the Bar Examinations in 1985.
