3 raptors set free in Bulacan natural park
SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines — Three brahminy kites, locally known as lawin, were recently released by environment officials in the Biak-Na-Bato National Park in Bulacan.
The raptors were initially surrendered by a concerned citizen to the city government, which turned the birds over to the Wildlife Enforcement Office (WEO), according to Dennis Vergara, chief of the Baliwag community environment and natural resources office.
Members of the WEO assessed the birds and found them healthy and active with no injuries.
Vergara told The STAR that five days after the turnover, the raptors were found fit for release into the wild.
The brahminy kite is classified as “least concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
In the Philippines, the species remains protected under Republic Act (RA) 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001.
Ralph Pablo, chief of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Central Luzon, stressed the importance of returning displaced wildlife to their habitats.
Pablo warned that collection, hunting, possession or trade of wildlife without authorization is prohibited under RA 9147.
