‘Declare missing photojournalist as 58th Maguindanao massacre victim’
MANILA, Philippines — The daughter of missing photojournalist Reynaldo “Bebot” Momay has appealed to the Court of Appeals for judicial recognition of her father as the 58th victim of the 2009 Maguindanao massacre.
Ma. Reynafe Momay-Castillo said in a manifestation filed through CenterLaw Philippines that the passage of time cannot diminish the State’s obligation to ensure accountability for grave human rights violations.
The massacre on Nov. 23, 2009 left 57 people dead, including 32 media workers, after a convoy on its way to file a certificate of candidacy was ambushed.
The incident is the deadliest attack on journalists in Philippine history.
Castillo said her father was in the convoy. However, his body has not been recovered.
She stressed that Momay’s recognition as the 58th victim is increasingly compelling, considering that it has been nearly 17 years since the massacre.
