Go seeks more police, counselors in schools
MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Bong Go is calling for stronger school safety measures, more visible law enforcement and accessible mental health support for students following the shooting at the San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, Leyte that killed three students.
In his manifestation on Wednesday, Go said the tragedy must not be treated only as a peace and order issue, but also as a youth welfare, public health and education concern.
“What makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking is that the alleged perpetrators are minors themselves,” he lamented.
The June 22 incident raised questions on school security, access to firearms and the possible influence of violent online content on minors.
There are only 4,069 licensed guidance counselors nationwide and the country needs around 47,000 to meet the ideal ratio, Go pointed out.
“We have 50 child psychiatrists in the Philippines. We really have a crisis in terms of our supply of mental health professionals,” he said.
