Magnitude 7.8 quake lifted coastlines in 35 areas – Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — The magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8 has caused shorelines in 35 areas to rise, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Phivolcs said a quick response team was deployed to conduct aerial survey, field investigation, and geologic impact and hazard assessments in quake-devastated areas.
The team conducted structural damage and intensity surveys as well as monitored aftershocks from June 9 to 16.
The survey showed tsunami effects and liquefaction in 52 coastal areas and 127 locations, respectively.
The team visited five provinces, two cities, 21 towns and 110 barangays displaced by the quake. They installed five temporary seismic stations to improve monitoring of aftershocks.
The group, along with workers of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources based in Soccsksargen, assisted local government units in assessing impending hazards in communities hit by landslides.
The team – composed of geologists, engineers and social scientists – split into sub-groups to be able to focus on their tasks including geologic impact and building damage survey, earthquake-induced landslide impact assessment, and instrumentation and aftershock monitoring.
